Stress Awareness Day is on 2nd November 2022 and this year we are encouraging residents of Hull and the East Riding to take control of their stress levels and seek support when they need it.

Millions of people around the UK experience stress and it is damaging to our health and wellbeing, so much so, that at some point in the last year, 74% of us have felt so stressed that we have felt unable to cope (Mental Health Foundation).

A small amount of stress can be useful in some circumstances. It can motivate you to take action and get tasks completed and it can also make you feel alive or excited. The problem comes when this stress starts playing a role in your everyday life or is so overwhelming that it prevents you from being able to carry out your normal routine.

In the UK, stress is often perceived as a normal part of life and there is an ongoing notion that you ‘just have to deal with it’.

Our services, such as the Emotional Wellbeing Service and the Your Health Service, would like to remind you that it is ok not to be ok, that stress does not have to play a role in your daily life, and that support is there when you need it.

Our Emotional Wellbeing Service can help you identify the differences between harmful and helpful stress. As well as help you to manage stress in ways you might not have thought of on your own. The service’s trained therapists are on hand and the service can be accessed through self-referral.

Our Your Health Service is equipped with dedicated Mental Health and Wellbeing Coaches who are trained to help people better manage stress, and to support people to live healthier lifestyles that meet their individual needs. The service operates a person-centred approach and 121 sessions to address those needs. You can be referred to the service through your GP Practice, as long as you are registered in Hull or the East Riding.

Sheryl Horton, Team Manager at the Emotional Wellbeing Service, Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“‘Experiencing stress over a long period of time can lead to a feeling of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion, often called burnout. Having that person to share your emotions with can really help you become calmer and see things from a perspective that you might not have thought of. Our service is here to help if you need it.”

Phil Anastasi, Project Officer at Your Health, Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“This Stress Awareness Day, we are reminding people that it is good to talk about how you are feeling. As a service, we support people to better recognise how stress is affecting their everyday life. It is our mission to provide guidance on how to better self-manager your stress levels, so that they do not escalate and impact your ability to cope. Come talk to us if you think we could support you today.”
