An introduction to Dominic Kelly, Our Governor for the East Riding of Yorkshire

Published: 29 August 2023 to 31 December 2098

Read our seventh Governor profile as part of our monthly Humber Happenings Newsletter, this month, we take a look at Dominic Kelly, and how one of our Governors for the East Riding of Yorkshire, has gone from Submarines to Select Committees.

Can you tell us a bit about your background please and how this led to you becoming a Governor?

I started my career as a Web and Systems Developer, working for educational institutions, including East Riding College, University of Hull, and North Lindsey College. Alongside my work, I gained a teacher training qualification, and decided to combine my interests in education, healthcare and web development. This led to a change in career, specialising as a Digital Training Developer, working at Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, Fieldhead Hospital, Rapid Transformational Therapy and Haxby Group GP Surgeries.

I was motivated to become a governor, because I wanted to do my bit and contribute to an improved medical service for people in my region. Moreover, I felt that I would be able to make valuable contributions towards the Trust's Strategy for “solving complex problems like digital technology”.

What appointments and experiences have you had that you felt was necessary to bring to this role?

Throughout my career, it has become clear to me that the leadership styles and policies in place can directly influence the ability to innovate effectively. I am delighted to be able to represent my local community and make all the necessary checks and balances. I hope this will lead to better outcomes, improving the quality of health service provision in the region. I am passionate about healthcare and giving back to my community.

I have experienced healthcare in a lot of different contexts and settings, spanning across primary care, secondary care, and tertiary care. In addition to this, I have experienced a completely different healthcare system altogether, having previously lived in Switzerland for several years.

I believe that my personal and professional experiences have given me a unique insight into the provision of healthcare services, enabling me to contribute something from a new or different perspective.

What are your hobbies and personal interests?

In my free time, I love travelling in the UK and abroad with my family. I also enjoy going to see live music and doing a bit of cooking. I have recently joined St John Ambulance, which I'm looking forward to.
