What is Research?

Healthcare Research aims to find better ways to prevent disease, improve treatments, and deliver safer, more effective care for patients and the public (NIHR, 2024).

Why is research important?

Helps discover ways to improve care and treatment for people.
Offers hope for the future –without research there is no change.
By taking part, people can voice their views.
Can lead to better outcomes for people.

What types of Research studies are there?

Trials of new treatments and new ways to support people.
Exploring genetics –e.g. saliva samples.
Testing new technology, websites and apps.
Health and wellbeing and experience questionnaires.

What to expect?

Initial chat with one of our research team to find out which studies might be appropriate for you and what is involved.
Time to ask any questions you may have.
Enough information to allow you to make a decision that is right for you (no pressure to take part).
Studies can vary in length, from a one-off questionnaire to a number of months.

Is research safe and can I change my mind?

NHS research studies are checked and approved by a national public body called the Health Research Authority, to protect the interests of patients and the public.
Studies are reviewed to make sure they are ethical.
Studies are closely monitored.
Taking part is voluntary.
You can stop taking part at any time.
