Staff Constituency

John Duncan

I became a Staff Governor (Non-Clinical) at the Trust because I am passionate about patient care and committed to providing a voice for staff at the Council of Governors.

I have been involved in the Trust since 2019 as the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion lead, and, as a Staff Governor, I advocate for a motivated, included and valued workforce, one where staff from all backgrounds have equal access to career opportunities and receive fair treatment in the workplace to help deliver high quality patient care, increased patient satisfaction and better patient safety.

I believe I bring a range of valuable skills to this role including in my professional capacity around workplace Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. Previously I have served as a Parish Councillor in East Yorkshire, and as a Governor at Hull College, undertaking a three-year term, where we faced a number of high-profile challenges, including the appointment of a new Principal and CEO. Similarly, I currently sit on the Council of the English Schools Football Association (ESFA), serving as their independent advisor on Equality and Diversity, where I have supported the ESFA in developing a new five-year equality and diversity strategy. These roles have provided me with experience as Chair and Vice-Chair of various committees and panels, where I have sat on finance, audit and investigation committees providing appropriate checks and balances around progress against annual strategies, plans and budgets.

Sara Bennett

l became a Clinical Governor for Humber as I am interested in improving care for our patients. I adhere to our trust values of Caring, Learning and Growing. I have experience from both a staff and a patient perspective.

I have been Nursing for forty years and am passionate about Nursing. My career started in Hull, and I have worked in Southend on Sea as a Deputy Sister in acute medicine and outpatients.

Before joining Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust I worked at James Cook Hospital on the trauma ward as a Staff Nurse. I have a graduate degree in enhancing medical care and a Bsc honours in acute care practice. I was an RCN steward in Southend for ten years and have recently taken up this role again to support and ensure policies are adhered to.

I feel strongly that patients should be treated with dignity, respect and compassion. My knowledge, experience and enthusiasm would prove invaluable in representing people’s viewpoint towards healthcare needs. My aim would be to represent people’s opinions about the NHS and ensure quality care. The wealth of skills and knowledge that I possess can be used in my role of clinical governor.

Why I stood for election as a Governor:

I stood for election as a Staff Governor because of my deep commitment to representing the interests and concerns of our staff. Having served proudly this Trust for 14 years, I have had the privilege of working alongside many talented and dedicated colleagues. Witnessing first hand the passion and dedication that staff bring to their roles inspired me to stand for election.

The role offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with staff at all levels, ensuring our Trust remains an outstanding place to work.

More about me:

I have worked for the Trust for over 14 years within the Estates Development Team initially joined as an Architectural Technician, focusing on design and specification. Over time, my role evolved to include project and cost management responsibilities. More recently, I have taken on a management role that oversees minor block capital programme, estates strategy, energy management and environmental sustainability. Outside of work, I enjoy travelling, attending the theatre, watching rugby league and spending quality time with family and friends.

Sian Johnson

I applied for the role of clinical staff governor as I have a keen interest in helping the Trust to improve its services both for those who use them, and staff who work within them.

I qualified as mental Health Nurse in 2007 and have worked for Humber since 2012. Over the past 13 years I have developed professional relationships and networks across all the divisions and consider myself to be a valued and respected colleague with clinical credibility. This places me in an excellent position to represent the voice of staff across the trust.

Over my 18 years of nursing, I have held positions within older people’s mental health, adult mental health and child and adolescent mental health services, in both inpatient, community and specialist services.

I am confident that I have the right values to be a staff governor and pride myself on my integrity, honesty, kindness and fairness.

I am passionate about patient safety, quality improvement, innovation, governance, training and development, and co-production.

Simon Mills

I have over 40 years’ combined experience of working in local government and the NHS.

I am a social worker and have worked in both mental health and learning disabilities services.  I am passionate about my work, our patients, our colleagues and the service we provide.

I started my career as a Care Assistant and I have been very fortunate to have had a career where my employers have invested in me, providing me with the education and training to become professionally qualified. I am the Team lead with the Intensive Support Team.

As a Governor, I want to be a part of a continuing process that ensures that we all continue with the excellent service that people at Humber provide.
