Mill View Lodge

An acute inpatient unit for people over 65 who are experiencing mental health problems.

The Team

Mill View Lodge is a ten-bedded inpatient unit for men and women aged 65 and over who are experiencing a functional mental illness. Each person has their own private bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. There is also a dedicated sitting room available for female patients.

Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team made up of a range of professionals, including nurses, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, dietitians, physiotherapists, healthcare assistants, junior doctors and a consultant psychiatrist.

The ward provides assessment and treatment throughout each admission, with a range of assessments completed to support individual care planning. Patients are offered one-to-one sessions with nursing staff, giving them the opportunity to discuss their mental health, feelings and any concerns they may have. Patients also work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure a holistic, person-centred approach to care.

A variety of professionally led, ward-based groups and activities are available. Patients are also encouraged, where possible, to continue with their usual routines and interests. Mill View Lodge works closely with the Crisis and Intervention Team for Older People (CITOP) to support patients in maintaining aspects of their home life and routines. This approach has been shown to reduce the need for lengthy admissions, support timely discharge, and ease the transition back into the community, with ongoing support following discharge from hospital.

Discharge planning begins at the point of admission, ensuring that patients, carers and staff have a clear set of shared goals, with returning home as the primary aim wherever possible.

Mill View Lodge is committed to providing a patient-centred service. The team actively welcomes feedback and suggestions from patients to help ensure that care and treatment continue to improve and develop.
