STaRS
At the Specialist Treatment and Recovery Service (STARS), we aim to maximise people’s recovery from mental health through intensive evidence-based interventions in people’s homes, placements and local communities. We work to support and restore people to their optimal physical, cognitive, psychological and social functioning. STaRS provides a multi-disciplinary approach, promoting recovery for individuals with complex and enduring mental health difficulties who may have may have previously had multiple inpatient admissions or whose needs cannot be met by less intensive mainstream adult mental health services.
STaRS operateS 7 days a week, 8am-8pm. We work with adults over the age of 18 and cover the whole of Hull and East Riding. Intervention frequency ranges from twice daily to fortnightly and is delivered for a time‑limited period of up to 18 months.
We offer an MDT assessment, followed by a biopsychosocial formulation, which informs individualised recovery work. In addition to direct intervention, STaRS offer consultation and professional advice to services involved with its service users. This helps to prevent placement breakdown, strengthen working relationships, and improve shared understanding of the person’s needs and strengths.
The Psychologically Informed Environments (PIE) model underpins the service ethos. PIE has at its core, safe and secure relationships and environments for staff and service users, delivered through training, supervision, and reflective practice. We also undertake regular evaluation using the ReQol and Dialog tools.
Compassion Focused Therapy is the psychological framework adopted by STaRS which is cited as being “the sensitivity to suffering in self and others, combined with the commitment to try and alleviate and prevent it”.
