Mental Health Support Teams supporting Year 6 children transitioning to Secondary School
Published: 13 July 2026
Mental Health Support Teams (MHST) from Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust are working in schools and over the summer to support children as they navigate the move to secondary schools ready for September.
Events are available for children and their families and carers to drop into and learn more about making a positive transition from primary to secondary education.
The move from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone for children and their families. While it's an exciting time, it's also completely normal for young people to experience worries or uncertainty about the changes ahead. Mental Health Support Teams are able to help make that transition as positive as possible by offering practical advice, strategies to build confidence and opportunities for families to ask questions in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Charlotte Dawson, Senior Mental Health Practitioner, said, “Parents and carers play an important role in helping children prepare for this next step. Encouraging open conversations about any worries, focusing on the exciting opportunities ahead, practising new routines where possible and reassuring children that it's okay to feel nervous can all make a real difference. We hope these sessions, attending and being present at local events and our online resources will help families feel more confident and supported as they get ready for September. If you see us out in your community, come and say hi, we are always happy to offer advice and guidance.”
