Latest Update: Townend Court and Miranda House Redesign

We are pleased to share an update on a significant redevelopment programme across two of our inpatient sites in Hull. This work reflects our continued commitment to delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care and ensuring people can receive the right support closer to home.

The programme is progressing well, with Townend Court Phase 1 (Beech Ward) due to be completed 31 July 2026.

Phase 2 (Lilac Ward) and Phase 3 (Willow Ward) are due to be completed at the end of December 2026. Miranda House works will commence early January 2027 for completion at the end of March 2027.

This investment will enable more patients to stay within their local area, helping them remain connected to their families and communities. Evidence shows that maintaining these connections reduces the length of stay, supports smoother transitions back into the community, improves recovery, and reduces the need for out‑of‑area placements.

Townend Court

The first phase of the redevelopment at Townend Court (Beech Ward) is nearing completion, with phase two (Lilac Ward) to commence in August. Phase three (Willow Ward) is on track for completion later this year.

The redesign includes purpose‑built suites to better meet the needs of people with learning disabilities, the flexible and person‑centred spaces are designed to support safety and comfort. 

Additionally the development of a new 6‑bed Women’s Intensive Therapeutic Care Unit will provide dedicated space for women who require high‑intensity psychiatric support.

Miranda House

Following the improvements at Townend Court, the facility at Miranda House will be redeveloped to create a 12‑bed Male PICU. This increased capacity will ensure that men who need more intensive care can remain closer to home.

Co-Production with Service Users

Service users have played a central role in shaping these changes. Their views on ward colours, fixtures, fittings and sensory elements have directly influenced the design. This co‑production approach ensures that the environments we create genuinely reflect the needs and experiences of the people who use them.

Key Benefits for Patients and Staff

A major part of the redevelopment includes the introduction of single-sex high intensity wards, which will support more personalised care, shorter hospital stays and improved overall experience. The changes at Miranda House will reduce and ultimately remove the need for patients from Hull and the surrounding areas to be treated far from home.
