An open letter from our CEO after the fire at Malton Hospital

Firstly, I would like to start by saying that I am never more impressed by our communities than in times of crisis. The fire in Malton has exemplified how local organisations work together to address the incident, and put patients and all the people it affects, first. 

I would like to personally recognise the efforts and actions of a huge number of organisations, alongside our own staff from Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, who have acted so quickly and effectively to secure the safety of all those involved. 

Hearing that North Yorkshire Police supported our district nursing staff to complete their community visits, when their car keys were unobtainable within the building, was just one of the incredible stories I have heard from the teams in Malton. Other acts of kindness I have been made aware of, such as donations of food and water from local businesses, further strengthen my admiration for the community of Malton. 

My sincere thanks and appreciation goes to the entire community but with special mention of all the staff at Malton Secondary School, Malton Community Hospital, North Yorkshire Police, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, Tees Esk and Wear Valley NHS Foundation Trust, CHCP, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Derwent GP Practice, North Yorkshire Council, Ryedale District Council, Beechwood Nursing Home, Manor Park Care Home, Morrisons, Paleys of Malton, The New Derwent Bistro of Malton, Dales of Malton and Yorkshire Water. I also wanted to recognise the local communities who have been affected by an incident like this so close to home.  

Finally special thank you to everyone single one of our staff on Fitzwilliam Ward at Malton Hospital who continue to place the care of our patients at the heart of everything they do. 

As we navigate the process of getting patients and staff safely back to the hospital, we continue to deliver the highest-quality care and remain committed to sharing information at the earliest opportunity with all involved.
