Specialist Psychotherapy Service

The Hull Specialist Psychotherapy Service provides psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults experiencing emotional or psychological difficulties.

What is psychoanalytic therapy? - British Psychoanalytic Council

“Meaningful psychotherapy is about slowing things down – so we can begin to see and understand the patterns that otherwise happen quickly, automatically, without reflection or awareness.”

Jonathan Shedler (2025)

Psychoanalytic or Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is a type of talking therapy. It involves exploring whatever is on your mind in a safe and confidential space with a trained therapist.

This approach helps you to become more aware of underlying thoughts, feelings, and patterns in your relationships and behaviour that may be contributing to your current difficulties.

Many people come to this type of therapy because they feel affected by experiences from the past, or feel stuck in repeating patterns, and want to understand these better.

Our service offers a supportive and private space where you can talk openly about yourself and what is troubling you. Together, we explore the links between your past and present experiences to help you make sense of how they connect.

Through this process, therapy can help you to:

•    Find relief from emotional distress
•    Gain clarity about what helps and what doesn’t
•    Recognise changes that may improve your life
•    Come to terms with things that cannot be changed
