Pulmonary Rehabilitation Accreditation for Scarborough, Ryedale and Whitby
Published: 11 August 2025

The Scarborough, Ryedale and Whitby Community Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service has been awarded national accreditation status by the Royal College of Physicians’ Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services Accreditation Scheme (PRSAS), marking a significant achievement and recognition of excellence in patient care.
Currently, there are only 20 services in the country to be awarded this accreditation, with Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust becoming the 21st.
Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s Scarborough, Ryedale and Whitby Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service runs pulmonary rehabilitation programmes at Scarborough Rugby Club, and in our two community hospital sites at Malton and Whitby.
The accreditation from PRSAS is a hallmark of quality that recognises pulmonary rehabilitation services that meet rigorous standards across clinical practice, patient safety and service leadership. It confirms that the service is delivering high-quality, patient-centred care that meets national best practice guidelines.
This national recognition reflects the dedicated efforts of the multidisciplinary team, working to support patients with chronic respiratory conditions through tailored rehabilitation programmes. These programmes help patients manage their symptoms, improve physical fitness and enhance their quality of life.
Within the assessment report it was noted that ‘The service has excellent leadership, which provides a lovely culture to work in and is very patient-centred’.
Beverley Quarton, Service Lead from Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust said, "We are absolutely delighted to receive this accreditation. It’s a testament to the commitment, professionalism and compassion shown by our team every day. We’re proud to offer a service that meets the highest national standards and supports people across Scarborough, Ryedale and Whitby to live more active, confident lives despite their lung condition."
The accreditation process involved a thorough external assessment, including a review of service documentation, clinical outcomes, patient and staff feedback, and site visits to ensure the service aligns with PRSAS’s rigorous criteria.
With respiratory health an increasingly important focus of NHS care, this accreditation highlights the service as a leading example of excellence in community respiratory support.
