Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s Speech and Language Therapy team have announced a new collaboration between their services and The Consortium Academy Trust (TCAT) to raise awareness of stammering across schools.

The Stammering Awareness Project draws together a School Awareness Pack which can be used to educate and support staff and pupils in learning more about stammering.

The School Awareness Pack includes resources for assemblies, visuals supporting awareness for schools and a short film co-produced with learners.

The idea for the project was sparked at Holderness Academy when a teacher delivered an assembly for Stammer Awareness Day. During the assembly the teacher shared a powerful personal reflection on how stammering had touched her own family and school life. This honesty resonated deeply with learners, particularly those experiencing speech disfluency, who shared that they often felt unheard.

One student was especially inspired. Having lived with a stammer herself, she had long feared many everyday tasks. With a determination to not let it hold her back she set herself a challenge: to take on a job answering phones at a busy takeaway. Through courage and perseverance, she was able to overcome her fears. As she will now say, “Now I can walk into any shop and ask for anything.”

As a result of this confidence, she turned to her teachers to say, “Miss – I am ready. I want to do something. I want to educate people about stammering.”

From this moment, the Stammering Awareness Project was born.

Our Trust’s Speech and Language Therapy team are now working together with TCAT producing resources and delivering support for the project to take shape.

As part of the project, teams have organised a workshop for learners with speech disfluency, as well as their families and friends. The workshop will be held at Holderness Academy on Thursday 25 September, ahead of the launch on Stammer Awareness Day, 22nd October 2025. Marking a vital step in supporting young people and supporting their path ahead.
