Flu vaccinations are made available to all NHS staff, to not only prevent them from unnecessary sickness, but to protect the health of the patients they care for. Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust now rank 2nd nationally for frontline staff vaccinations and are placed 1st in the region.

Figures issued this week show Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust has vaccinated 55.3% of their frontline staff, securing them second place nationally across all Trusts in England for frontline staff flu vaccinations. The programme of clinics only began last month and is set to continue into the winter period.

Flu can be a very serious illness for some people, sometimes requiring hospital admissions, particularly for those people who are more vulnerable. In January 2025, NHS England announced that the number of patients in hospital due to flu related illness was 3.5 times higher than the previous year. To help reduce this risk, NHS Trusts are nationally working to improve vaccination uptake of all their staff.

Michele Moran, Chief Executive at Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust said, “First and foremost our Trust prioritises the safety and care of our patients. Having our staff vaccinated against flu protects them and protects our patients. Our Trust is geographically diverse and we cover a large area so this incredible achievement of reaching 2nd place nationally is a testament to everyone involved.”

Communications and increased clinics have been key to the success of the vaccination programme to ensure staff are aware of the benefits and reasons for being vaccinated, but also how easy it is to do.

Karen Phillips, Executive Director of People & OD, said, “Our Trust has always run clinics at various locations across the Trust to make getting their vaccination as easy as possible for our staff. We know how dedicated our staff are to patient care so we also bring additional clinics to those areas where staff find it harder to leave their place of work. It is such a simple idea which has made all the difference to staff, and we are delighted at how many staff have been able to receive theirs this year.”

As the Trust continues to build on the momentum of this success, they are ensuring even more staff will be vaccinated in the months ahead. Their commitment demonstrates that in line with the NHS 10 year plan, prevention is one of the strongest forms of patient care.
