Carers Rights Day 2022 Article

This year, National Carers Rights Day will be held on Thursday 24 November.  Whether you are a new carer or have been caring for someone for a while, we believe that it’s important that you understand your rights and are able to access the support that is available to you as soon as you need it.

Many people are taking on more caring responsibilities for their relatives and friends who are disabled, ill, or older and who need support.

Each year, Carers Rights Day helps us to:

  • ensure carers are aware of their rights
  • let carers know where to get help and support
  • raise awareness of the needs of carers

Looking after someone

Carers need to know their rights, wherever they are in their caring journey.

This Carers Rights Day, we want to empower carers with information and support, so they can feel confident asking for what they need. We also want carers to know how to challenge things when their rights are not being met.

Looking after someone is a guide created by Carers UK and includes helpful information and support for anyone caring for family or friends. The guide outlines your rights as a carer and gives an overview of the practical and financial support available.

Our Trust values

Our Trust recognises the importance of carers getting support and we strongly encourage our staff to learn the importance of identifying carers in their everyday work.

To help them do this, we have a Carers Champion network, which trains and supports our members of staff who are interested in identifying unpaid carers and raise support in their own services, families and communities.

By completing the training programme, our teams can help carers access the right support to improve their wellbeing and those who they are caring for.

We also have a Carers Practice Note available to all staff on our internal platform, which provides important information on identifying carers, offering carers assessments. It also equips our staff with all the latest signposting information for support available in other local organisations.
