Nursing through the Decades - Podcast Series

To celebrate the first ever International Year of the Nurse and Midwife we are launching our Nursing through the Decades podcast series.

You will hear inspirational stories from our nurses as they take you through their journey of caring for patients during different decades, starting from the 1970s through to the present day.

It will highlight how nursing has changed through the years to arrive at the evidence based practices we have today.

Nursing in the 1970s: The Gift of Time

Gill Craik, Nursing Facilitator at our Trust, did her nurse training from 1972 to 1975 at what is now known as Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

After Gill qualified she worked on a Cardiac Monitoring Unit but after six months, Gill realised that her passion lay in district nursing. Gill had always wanted a nursing career where she could develop deeper, longer relationships with patients and their families and district nursing seemed to fulfil those criteria for Gill.

Gill’s podcast take you through her journey as a district nurse where she cared for patients in their homes across Hull.  You will hear about long forgotten practices like placing patients receiving end of life care on sheepskins and how patients would place their wound care products in metal tins and heat them up on their ovens ready for the nurse to use!

It a story of compassion and love for a job that has led Gill into training and developing nurses so they continue to provide the best possible care for our  patients.
