Family Therapy and Family Interventions

Providing therapy and interventions for families affected by mental healthproblems in Hull and the East Riding.

The Team

Family therapy (sometimes known as Systemic Psychotherapy) and family interventions are research informed, strengths based psychological therapies. They use the personal experiences and knowledge that individuals, couples and their families have about themselves and each other to help make sense of difficulties and challenges and find new ways to move on.

When someone experiences a serious mental health problem it affects the whole family, and these approaches to treatment include and support all family members.

Sessions can include anyone the service user thinks would be helpful to involve in discussions. These people could include relatives such as parents, children, grandparents, partners and siblings. They may also include other people who are important in the service user’s life, such as friends or other helpers. Connection with the person’s care co-ordinator is maintained throughout the treatment process so that treatment provided is ‘joined up’ and consistent.

The team has two family therapists as well as staff from different professions who have undertaken, or are undertaking, additional training in family therapy or interventions. The team provide direct treatment to service users and their families at several settings across Hull and the East Riding, and also offer online sessions where families prefer to work in this way.

How to Access this Service

Referrals are accepted from any Adult Mental Health Services team within Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust.

If you or your family think that family therapy or family interventions might help you, speak to your care co-ordinator who can refer you to the team. If you would like to talk with a member of the team to find out more about these treatments and their benefits, your care co-ordinator will be able to arrange this for you. If you want to go ahead with the referral, you and your family will be invited to complete a short questionnaire to identify how we can help you.

If you are not currently in mental health services, you can arrange a mental health assessment through the Mental Health Response Service (MHRS) process to consider if secondary mental health services may be beneficial for you.
