Beat the January Blues Article

The third Monday of January has been awarded the gloomy title due to a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark nights, and the arrival of unpaid credit card bills.

This year, Blue Monday falls on 16th January 2023.

Our East Riding Emotional Wellbeing Service are here for you. The dedicated team want to share with you a few ways to get through difficult moments and the support available to you if it all gets too much.

  1. Have something to look forward to – whether it’s a day out with your best friend, or a summer holiday in the works, studies have shown that having something to look forward to creates a hopeful attitude moving forward.
  2. Get involved in Blue Monday – be intentional about the day, instead of focusing on why or how the day got its name, make an effort to turn this around and make it a positive day. Get together with family and friends, make your favourite meal, or simply get your wellies on and go for a walk-in nature. Sometimes, a positive mindset can make all the difference.
  3. Start on those New Year’s resolutions – we know financially things are tough at the moment and that the gloomy weather might mean that many of us are staying at home more than we’re used to at the moment. Try to take advantage of the extra down time by writing down your goals – whether it’s to learn a new craft or to simply have more time to relax, there’s no better time than the present to get started!

Sometimes, however, it doesn’t matter how many activities we engage in or how much time we set aside for self-care; we just do not feel like ourselves. That is ok too. If you feel overwhelmed, like you don’t know what to do or that things are getting on top of you, please be assured that our Emotional Wellbeing Service is here for you.

The service is free to all East Riding residents and provides free, impartial support and advice to help you get back on track.
