Art display celebrates Autistic Pride Day

The Humber Adult Autism Diagnosis Service (HAADS), in partnership with Hull autism charity, Matthew’s Hub have created a special art display to celebrate Autistic Pride Day 2022.

Celebrated on 18^th June, Autistic Pride Day was first marked in 2005 and quickly became a global event. It aims to raise awareness amongst those who are not on the autistic spectrum disorder so see autistic people as unique individuals with a difference, not a disability.

The group used a range of artistic techniques, from pencil drawing to pop art, to create a display that which celebrates Autistic Pride in a way that’s personal to them. 

The HAADS team work in partnership with community organisation Matthew’s Hub, who provide pre and post diagnosis support for those either awaiting assessment or who have received a diagnosis of ASD.

A young person with a recent diagnosis of Autism and their mum shared their feelings on their journey with HAADS.

They said: “Victoria (HAADS Clinician) made me feel really comfortable. She has been great with us. I go to Matthew’s Hubs groups. The people are really nice and it feels normal just hanging out.”

Their mum said: “Now we know and it’s confirmed it isn’t going to hinder life we are coming out of the other side. I’ve met other mum’s for coffee and have made friends. I don’t feel judged any more”
