Trust staff create theatre audience handouts for touring musical about depression

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust have helped design audience handouts for an award-winning musical about depression.

'A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Super Sad)' is a "hilarious cabaret musical" about depression that aims to tell its theatre-goers that it is "ok not to be ok."

The show is brought by Hull-based Silent Uproar and is influenced by the company's own experiences with mental health problems.

Co-produced by Hull UK City of Culture 2017, the show has been touring the UK and will visit Hull in November.

Performances have been funded by Hull's Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) as a way to raise awareness of mental health issues among students.

They have also arranged for the cast and crew to have mental health awareness training with Hull and East Yorkshire MIND.

Keen to offer the audience mental health support information, Hull CCG approached clinical staff at the Trust to help design handouts which would be given to the public after the show.

Trust staff Paul Warwick, Clinical Lead for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Service and Martin Beaumont, Advanced Occupational Therapist worked with graphic designer Caitlin McEvoy at Hull Truck to watch the show and contribute helpful guidance for the materials.

The cards offer contact information for the mental health charity MIND, and offers practical advice on self-kindness, being active and getting connected.

Alex Mitchell, Artistic Director of Silent Uproar, said: "We wanted to make a show that was entertaining, accessible and discussed depression without being a depressing show.

David Smith, Chief Executive at Hull and East Yorkshire Mind, said: "One in four people have problems with their mental health every year, but too often people are afraid to talk about it. Having these all important conversations about mental health can make a big difference to many people.

"The more we talk, the more lives we can change."

A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Super Sad) is showing at Hull University's Donald Roy Theatre on Thursday, November 1 and Friday, November 2.
