Trust Nurse recognised for marvellous quality of care by UK charity
28 December 2018

A specialist nurse from the East Riding of Yorkshire has been honoured with a national award for her outstanding work.

Alison Walker, Community Cardiac Specialist Nurse at Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust was nominated by a patient to receive a ‘You’re Simply Marvellous’ award.

Based at Hessle Primary Care Centre, Alison’s work has been recognised by The Pumping Marvellous Foundation, with the award acknowledging the value that Alison and other healthcare professionals bring to the treatment of heart failure patients throughout the UK.

Heart failure patient Sarah Worsnop has commended Alison for her outstanding patient care in going above and beyond the call of duty to support Sarah and her family post diagnosis, and for always being honest, understanding and compassionate in her attitude towards Sarah’s care.

Sarah commented “Alison is just utterly, superbly marvellous and I’d have been lost without her. She was such an enormous support to myself and my whole family post diagnosis.

“She advocated for me when I was having issues with my GP prescribing medication. She helped me with my PIP claim and getting my pension after I was medically retired. She was always at the end of a phone when I needed support, she brought me videos of the procedure when I was waiting for my CABG procedure, not to terrify me but because she knew me well enough that she knew I would feel better having seen what was going to happen to me!

“Alison wasn’t only here for me, she supported my husband and my mum through an incredibly tough time - she even helped my husband put up a bannister for me when I was struggling to climb the stairs! Talk about above and beyond!

“Most of all, I’m thankful to her because she told me straight when I asked questions, without being patronising or hiding the severity of my condition from me. I always felt like she had my back and she was the reason I didn’t end up rocking in a corner somewhere. She really deserves this award because she’s marvellous at her job, a lovely person and is passionate about patients living well with heart failure.”

As the representative of the UK Heart Failure patients’ voice, The Pumping Marvellous Foundation emphasises the importance of the patient perspective in recognising and rewarding healthcare professionals.

“We are delighted that our patient community has chosen Alison Walker to receive this yearly award from the charity. It's so important that patients and their families can work with and operate as a team with their healthcare professional and Alison Walker was one of only five chosen people across the United Kingdom to be nominated by the charity’s patients. A superb achievement and all five should be proud of themselves”, explains Nick Hartshorne Evans, Founder and CEO of The Pumping Marvellous Foundation.

Awards were received by the winners the week before Christmas alongside a personalised commendation letter explaining the reasons behind their selection.

“Congratulations to all our award winners. Many of these awards are as a result of nominations of patients which makes them extra special. This is also a time to recognise all the professionals that are striving to provide excellence in care for patients and their carers throughout the UK. Our gratitude goes out to you all,” says Angela Graves, Clinical Lead of The Pumping Marvellous Foundation.
