The dazzling dozen! Top stories from 2018

As 2018 draws to a close, we look back on the top stories of the year...

1. Trust boss to achieve 36 years’ service in NHS on the day service celebrates 70th birthday The NHS celebrated its 70th birthday in July and we held celebrations across the Trust to mark this huge milestone.

2. Construction begins on £7.8m new mental health inpatient unit for young people The green light to begin building the unit in Walker Street, Hull, came on the 70thbirthday of the NHS when the Department for Health and Social Care approved the £7.8 million of funding after concluding that Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s plans were sound and value for money.

3. CQC raises Trust's overall rating to 'good' as patient care improves The Trust improved its overall rating from ‘requires improvement’ to ‘good’ in less than 16 months, according to the latest report by health and social care inspectors in January. 

4. Reopening of mental health inpatient unit following half a million pound refurbishment Maister Lodge on Hauxwell Road had been undergoing major improvements since 2016. 

5. Trust Research and Development conference a smash hit Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s second annual research and development conference has been hailed a great success.

6. Trust nurse hitches lift on hubby's tractor to beat 'Beast from the East' and open town's minor injuries unit A specialist nurse hit the headlines after hitching a lift to work on her husband’s tractor so she could beat the ‘Beast from the East’ snowstorm.

7. Double award nod celebration: Trust nominated for prestigious HSJ accolade Hot on the heels of a General Practice Award nomination, the Trust celebrated the news of another award nod. Finalists for the 2018 Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards have been announced with the Trust being recognised in the category of ‘Innovation in Mental Health’.

8. Local NHS charity aiming to raise £600,000 to add extra ‘sparkle’ to Hull’s new children’s mental health unit With work now well underway, the Trust’s charity Health Stars is looking to raise funds to add enhanced features to the building which children wish could be provided.

9. NHS Healthtrainers launch dedicated service to help East Coast fishermen Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust are launching a dedicated Healthtrainer service that aims to improve the health and quality of life of the region’s fishermen.

10. Trusts team up to help people with mental health problems over winter Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust are teaming up to ensure people in mental health crisis are supported as much as those facing physical health emergencies this winter.

11. Good-pie to excess pounds: Adults using new weight management programme lose equivalent of 22,500 mince pies since its launch Adults using a new weight management service have lost the equivalent of 22,500 mince pies in nine months. They shed 1,464.7 kg, over 230 stones, on a free North Yorkshire pilot programme run by Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust.

12. Trust celebrates having two surgeries in the region’s Top 10 after results of patient survey are revealed Hallgate Surgery and The Chestnuts Surgery, both in Cottingham, have been hailed amongst the best of the best after receiving positive feedback.
