Co-op Food and Funeral outlets from across Hull have raised just under £5,000 for a local NHS charity and their volunteers service.

Health Stars, the charity for Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, have received the funds after 9 local stores and their customers crowned them their charity of choice.

Clare Woodard, Head of Fundraising for Health Stars said: “This is an amazing donation and we are so grateful to the Coop for their support.”

The money has been raised by Co-op who give 1% of what members spend on Co-op branded food products in stores and selected services, as well as money raised from carrier bag sales.

They give the money to local projects from improving community spaces or helping school leavers learn life skills, to simply connecting people.

This particular donation has been flagged to help the Trust operate their voluntary services minibus.

Used to take more than 300 people a year to social groups and appointments, the minibus is a valuable asset to the region with Clare adding: “The volunteer services mini bus is a life-line to a lot of isolated and vulnerable patients so this generous gift means a lot to us.”

Health Stars works to ‘add sparkle’ to the community and mental health services provided by the Trust to more than 800,000 people in Hull, East Riding and North Yorkshire.

The charity actively encourage the development of exceptional healthcare which goes above and beyond NHS core services by investing into patient environments, resources and research.

From baby toys for health visitor clinics, memory boxes for bereaved families and adapted iPads for stroke patients, the charity have delivered over 250 wishes to the local NHS community.

Sam Grey, the Trust’s Voluntary Services manager, said: “We were surprised and delighted to find out that we’d been awarded this amount from the Co-op community fund. It felt like a mini lottery win!

“We are always looking for ways to support the ongoing costs of our volunteer transport service, which takes people to our community groups and social activities. The service is priceless and provides a real lifeline for many people who are isolated.

“Thank you to everyone who chose to support our appeal when using their membership card in Co-op stores, the community fund is a real asset to local organisations.”
