Criminal Justice and Criminal Justice Prescribing

Criminal Justice

This element of the service is run by Nacro. Referrals are received from all areas of the criminal justice system: prisons, courts, police, the National Probation Service and community rehabilitation companies. Attendance is frequently attached to licence conditions, bail or court orders in the form of Alcohol Treatment Requirements (ATRs) and Drug Rehabilitation Requirements (DRRs) via six to nine-month intensive programmes. Self-referrals are also accepted from people who have recently been in the CJ system.

The focus of work is support towards behaviour change linked to offending and substance misuse, keeping people safe and engaged in treatment, and encouraging joint working with a wide variety of partners depending on individual client needs.

Nacro Intensive Engagement workers work intensively with a small number of individuals in ‘hot spot’ areas of the East Riding to reduce homelessness and increase engagement with support services. These clients will have been in contact with the criminal justice system and have multiple complex needs characterised by one or more of the following:

  • Entrenched in their alcohol/substance use
  • Identified as dependent drinkers
  • Have mental or physical health problems
  • At risk of becoming homeless or sofa surfing
  • ‘Revolving Door’ in and out of prison

The Nacro Homes Agency has a small number of properties in Howden, Goole, Bridlington and Hornsea, supported by a dedicated housing worker. This area of the service is developing.

Criminal Justice Prescribing

This is a dedicated service supporting the prescribing needs of those subject to monitoring within the East Riding criminal justice system. Working together with the psychosocial service delivered by Nacro, the East Riding Criminal Justice Prescribing service is embedded within the East Riding Addictions Recovery Treatment Service at Baker Street Treatment Centre, and supports the treatment of drug users as part of a stepped plan of recovery.

The team comprises a nurse with support from the staff within the Addictions Recovery Treatment Service.
