Hull Child and Adolescent Mental Health service (CAMHS) provides a specialist assessment and treatment service to children and young people who are experiencing significant emotional or mental health difficulties, who live within the Hull City boundary and/or who are registered with a GP in Hull. The age range covered by this service is up to and including 18 year olds. There is no lower age limit but in practice CAMHS involvement does not usually begin before the age of four or the start of attendance at primary school.
The Primary Mental Health Service component of Hull CAMHS is the point of access for consultations and referrals relating to a child or young person with actual or possible mental health problems. It also acts as the interface between CAMHS and universal services for children and young people (for example GPs, school nurses, social workers, teachers, voluntary workers).
The service provides support, training, advice and consultation to universal services who are working directly with these young people. It also undertakes initial screening and assessments, and provides specific focused short-term therapeutic work with children, young people, and families where appropriate. Children and young people requiring more intensive or longer term therapeutic intervention, or specialist assessment are passed to the core community CAMHS for Hull.
The PMHS team consists of professionals from health and social care and includes input from clinical psychology. We also have input and support from consultant child and adolescent psychiatry and other CAMHS specialists when required. As the service is integrated within specialist CAMHS it ensures responsive service provision according to the level of mental health needs, both in terms of response time and the nature and frequency of intervention.
The service is based at Tavistock Street in Hull. It operates between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. In addition to this a PMH Worker may, on occasions, offer input at other times, however there is no formal arrangement in place for an out of hours service or for a rapid response service to be provided by the PMH Service.
This community-based service is provided at various locations across the city of Hull in order to be able to offer families an accessible and convenient service within a less stigmatising and less threatening environment.
