Humber NHS Foundation Trust’s perinatal mental health service is celebrating after being shortlisted for a prestigious British Journal of Midwifery Practice Award.

The team, which supports women in Hull and East Yorkshire who have antenatal and post-natal mental health problems, is in the running for the ‘Team of the Year’ prize.

The award recognises collaborative working and innovation and is presented to the team which has demonstrated an exceptional contribution to midwifery.

The Trust team has been shortlisted for its commitment to resolving everyday challenges in perinatal mental health, such as poor attendance and the need to improve prediction, diagnosis and referral rates.

Members have worked with partners to deliver high-quality, funded clinical practice and service development projects.

Their efforts have earned them a local, regional, national and international reputation for research and strategy.

Team lead Claire Marshall said: “It’s an honour to be shortlisted for the award and the entire team is delighted to have been recognised in this way.

“It’s a real testament to the care and passion of the team, who work so hard to provide much needed support to people who are struggling.”

She and her team offer early detection of mental health issues, specialist assessments, early interventions, customised perinatal mental health care plans, and family protection and welfare.

They also provide women and family-centred care, education and training events for core health professionals, and collaborative working at all stages of the detection and care cycle.

The team will find out if they have won the award at a ceremony scheduled to be held at the Royal Liver Building in Liverpool on Wednesday 7 February.

If they are successful it will be their third honour in two months.

They emerged as the big winners during the Trust’s 2017 Staff Awards, bagging the Mental Health Team of the Year honour and then scooping the biggest accolade of the evening – Outstanding Team of the Year.

The team received its second award from Julie Jomeen, Professor of Midwifery and Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Hull, in front of an audience of 130 guests at Willerby Manor Hotel.
