'A Better Future in Mind' - 2017 Annual Report by Julia Weldon, Director of Public Health and Adult Services at Hull City Council

Julia Weldon, Director of Public Health and Adult Services at Hull City Council, has produced a short documentary for 'A Better Future in Mind', her fourth annual report.

The film explores what is meant by mental health and emotional well-being and what is being done to address different aspects such as mental well-being in children and young people; reducing stigma; mental health and employment; connected communities and suicide prevention.

Ms Weldon has chosen to focus on mental health because it is a national as well as a local priority. The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health stresses the need for key partners, including clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and local authorities to work together to target those groups of people known to be at higher risk of developing mental health problems. A mental health and suicide prevention action plan has been launched in Hull by the City Council and its NHS partners, including Humber NHS Foundation Trust. The plan adds detail to the recommendations in Ms Weldon's film.

In developing and producing the film, Ms Weldon has worked closely with NHS Hull CCG, the Hull 2017 City of Culture team and other partners in the business, voluntary and community sectors. She is keen to ensure the report is accessible to a wide audience so the City Council and its partners can engage as many people as possible with their aim of starting a city-wide conversation on mental health and making Hull an emotionally healthy city in which to live and work.
