Recovery: meeting needs and achieving goals

What is recovery?

The term ‘recovery’ can be confusing because it means different things to different people.  This is partly because there are two types of ‘recovery’ that people speak of.

The first is a clinical recovery and this is where the symptoms of the mental health condition are no longer present and the individual is able to get back to ‘normal’.

The second is a personal recovery.  This generally means the building of a meaningful life as defined by the person themselves, whether or not they have symptoms.  This is, by definition, going to be different process from one person to another.

Recovery focused services aim to provide support for a clinical recovery (meeting needs) and the individual’s personal recovery (and achieving goals).

There are four key components of recovery:

  • finding and maintaining hope;
  • the re-establishment of a positive identity;
  • finding meaning in life;
  • Taking responsibility for one’s life.
